Topsoil Calculator

Estimate how much topsoil you need from the area, your chosen depth, and an optional product-specific bag volume.

Where are you adding topsoil?

Depth and extra soil

Topsoil depth

Enter the topsoil depth planned for this project. Decimal inches are accepted for shallow applications such as topdressing.

For a raised bed, enter only the depth you intend to fill with topsoil or your chosen soil mix. This calculator estimates volume, not the recommended composition of a raised-bed growing medium.

No extra soil is added by default. Add an allowance if you want a planning buffer for uneven grade, handling or anticipated settling.

Bag volume information

Enter the actual volume printed on the bag. No bag size is assumed, and net weight is not used.

How it works

How to calculate how much topsoil you need.

We calculate the surface area, multiply by your chosen depth, then apply only the extra soil percentage you enter.

Rectangular and circular areas

Area = length × width, or π × (diameter ÷ 2)²

Multiple-area mode totals each rectangle multiplied by its quantity. Every area uses the same depth.

Topsoil volume

Geometric volume = measured area × depth

US results use cubic yards with cubic feet alongside them; metric results use cubic meters.

Extra soil

Order volume = geometric volume × (1 + allowance %)

The allowance starts at 0%. It is a user-selected planning buffer, not an automatic physical correction.

Bagged topsoil

Bags = round up(order volume ÷ actual volume per bag)

The calculator uses only the volume you copy from the package and never assumes a universal bag size.

Practical planning notes

Depth and soil use depend on the project.

Choosing a topsoil depth

Measure the depth you plan to add rather than relying on an automatic preset. Existing grade, project goals, and site conditions all affect that decision.

Lawns and topdressing

Shallow topdressing may use decimal inches. Enter only the layer you intend to spread and confirm that plan against the needs of the lawn.

Topsoil and raised beds

Rectangle mode can estimate a raised-bed fill volume. Use the intended fill depth, but choose the growing-medium composition separately from this quantity calculation.

Bagged vs bulk topsoil

Use the exact volume for a bulk quote. For bags, enter the volume printed on the product and compare the resulting whole-bag count with local delivery terms.

Before you order

What this topsoil estimate assumes

  • Entered surfaces are regular rectangles or circles and do not overlap.
  • Every area in one calculation uses the same uniform depth; calculate different depths separately.
  • The depth is chosen by you and is used directly without an automatic recommendation.
  • Extra soil is optional and starts at 0%; it is a user-selected planning allowance, not an automatic compaction or settling correction.
  • Bag counts depend only on the actual package volume you enter. No universal bag format or net-weight conversion is assumed.
  • Supplier increments, truckloads, local prices, soil type, composition, density, and weight are outside this estimate.

Use horticultural and product information

Appropriate depth and growing-medium composition depend on the project, while bag volumes vary by product. Confirm those choices before ordering.

Extension guidance informs the educational notes only; it does not create calculator presets. Manufacturer packaging remains the source for volume per bag.

Topsoil questions

Frequently asked questions

How much topsoil do I need?

Multiply the measured area by the depth you plan to add, then include only the extra planning allowance you choose. This calculator performs the conversions and keeps geometric and order volumes separate.

How many cubic yards of topsoil do I need?

Measure the project area and multiply it by the intended depth. The calculator converts that geometric volume to cubic yards without rounding it to a supplier increment.

How deep should topsoil be?

There is no single depth for every lawn, garden, grading, or raised-bed project. Enter the depth required by your specific plan and consult appropriate horticultural guidance when deciding it.

How much topsoil do I need for a lawn?

Enter the lawn area and the layer you intend to add. Decimal inches can represent shallow topdressing, while deeper work should follow the needs of the lawn and site.

How much soil do I need for a raised bed?

Use rectangle mode with the inside length, width, and intended fill depth. The result estimates volume only; choose the appropriate growing-medium composition separately.

How many bags of topsoil make a cubic yard?

There is no universal bag count. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so divide 27 by the actual cubic-foot volume printed on the bag and round up for a whole-bag purchase count.

Should I add extra topsoil for settling?

Only add an allowance when it fits your plan. The calculator starts at 0% and never applies an automatic settling or compaction factor; site conditions and supplier guidance should inform your choice.
