Decking Calculator

Estimate straight parallel deck-board rows and whole stock boards from actual board dimensions, spacing and run length.

How will the boards run?

Deck layout

Measurement system

Deck sections

Board run length follows the boards. Width across boards is perpendicular to them and determines the row count.

Board run length
Width across boards

Decking product dimensions

Use the actual board width, stock length and required installed spacing for your product. Decking dimensions and spacing requirements vary by manufacturer and product.

Actual board width
Stock board length

Enter the installed side-to-side gap required for your decking product and conditions. Use the current manufacturer installation instructions.

This conservative estimate counts whole stock boards for every row. It does not optimize staggered joints or reuse offcuts between rows.

Extra decking

A 10% starting allowance is included for cuts, damaged boards and jobsite waste. Adjust it for your layout and manufacturer or installer guidance.

Decking formulas

How rows and stock boards are counted.

All dimensions convert to canonical units first. Each section is rounded independently, while the extra-material allowance is applied once to the combined base-board count.

Board rows

Rows = ceil((deck width + gap) ÷ (board width + gap))

Adding one gap to the numerator accounts for no outside gap after the final board.

Boards per row

Stock boards per row = ceil(run length ÷ stock length)

The result does not assume perfect offcut reuse between rows.

Section total

Base boards = rows × boards per row × quantity

Every section is calculated before totals are added.

Purchase count

Boards to buy = ceil(base boards × (1 + allowance %))

The editable 10% starting allowance is applied once after all base counts are combined.

Measure and plan

Use dimensions that describe the installed product.

Board run vs deck width

Board run length follows each plank. The perpendicular deck width determines how many parallel rows are needed.

Actual board width

Nominal product names may differ from actual installed width. Use the measured or specified product dimension.

Installed gap

Spacing requirements vary by product and conditions. Enter the current manufacturer-required side-to-side gap rather than a universal value.

Stock length

A run longer than one stock board requires multiple whole boards in every row. Offcuts are not automatically reassigned.

Multiple sections

Divide L-shaped decks or changing board orientations into rectangles so every section has its own run and width.

Complex layouts

Picture frames, breaker boards, diagonal patterns and other layouts require separate material planning.

Before you order

What this decking estimate assumes

  • Every section uses straight, parallel field boards with one actual width, gap and stock length.
  • Rows and boards per row are rounded independently for each rectangular section.
  • The estimate does not optimize staggered joints, cut plans or offcut reuse between rows.
  • The 10% starting allowance is editable and never changes automatically for material or deck size.
  • Picture frames, breaker boards, diagonals, inlays, stairs, fascia and railings are not included.
  • The calculated area is informational and is never used as a shortcut for the physical board count.

Surface decking only

This calculator estimates deck surface boards only. Joist spacing, framing, fastening and structural requirements depend on the decking product, layout, loads and applicable rules. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and applicable building requirements.

Joists, beams, posts, footings, ledgers, hangers, fasteners, clips, railings, stairs, labor, cost and code compliance are not calculated.

Decking questions

Frequently asked questions

How many deck boards do I need?

Calculate the parallel rows from actual board width and gap, then multiply by the whole stock boards required along each row. Measivo performs those steps per section.

How many 16-foot deck boards do I need?

Enter 16 ft as the stock length. The count still depends on each board run, deck width, actual board width, gap and allowance.

Does board spacing affect how many boards I need?

Yes. The installed gap forms a repeating module with board width, while the last board has no exterior gap after it.

Should I use actual or nominal board width?

Use actual or manufacturer-specified installed width. Nominal names may not match the physical product.

How much extra decking should I buy?

Measivo starts at 10% for cuts, damage and jobsite waste. Adjust it for your layout and manufacturer or installer guidance.

Can I use offcuts from one row on another?

Sometimes, but reliable reuse depends on joint layout, support locations and product rules. This conservative MVP does not optimize offcuts.

Does this calculator work for composite decking?

The geometry works for wood, composite or PVC when you enter the product’s actual dimensions, stock length and required gap. Always follow its installation instructions.

Does this calculator calculate joists?

No. Framing, joist spacing, beams, posts, footings, loads and structural requirements are outside this surface-board estimate.

Does it include picture-frame decking?

No. Picture frames, breaker boards, diagonals, herringbone, chevrons, inlays, stairs and fascia require separate planning.
