Sod Calculator

Estimate the sod area your lawn needs, then optionally convert it into whole pieces, rolls, or pallets using supplier coverage.

How much lawn are you covering?

Lawn shape

Measurement system

Lawn area

Diameter

For an irregular lawn, divide it into measurable sections. Use the Square Footage Calculator when you need additional shapes or rectangular cutouts. Open the Square Footage Calculator.

Extra sod

A 5% starting allowance is included for cuts, trimming, measurement differences and damaged pieces. Adjust it for your project and supplier guidance.

How will you buy sod?

Choose area only, or calculate whole purchase units from coverage supplied for the exact product.

Sod sizes and pallet coverage vary by supplier. Enter the coverage listed by the farm, retailer or manufacturer.

How it works

How to calculate how much sod you need.

The calculator measures the lawn, adds only the allowance you choose, then optionally converts order area into whole supplier units.

Lawn area

Area = length × width, or π × (diameter ÷ 2)²

Multiple mode totals every rectangle multiplied by its quantity. Known-area mode uses the entered area directly.

Extra sod

Order area = measured area × (1 + allowance %)

The starting 5% stays editable and never changes automatically.

Whole purchase units

Units = round up(order area ÷ supplier coverage per unit)

The calculation works for pieces, rolls, or pallets without assuming a universal size.

Whole-unit rounding

Extra coverage = purchased coverage − order area

This is coverage created by buying whole units; it is not labeled as waste.

Measure and order

Use your lawn measurements and supplier specification.

Measure your lawn

Break a complex yard into non-overlapping rectangles or circles. Keep sections with different needs separate when that makes measurement clearer.

How much extra sod?

Measivo starts at 5% for cuts, trimming, measurement differences, and damaged pieces. Adjust it for the layout and supplier guidance.

Pieces, rolls, and pallets

Choose the unit your supplier actually sells, then enter that unit’s published square-foot or square-meter coverage.

Why pallet coverage varies

Sod dimensions, stacking, farm practices, and supplier packaging vary. There is no universal pallet coverage in this calculator.

Whole-pallet rounding

A whole purchase unit may cover more than the exact order area. Measivo shows that additional coverage separately from the selected allowance.

Preparing the site

This result covers sod area only. Soil preparation, installation, watering, fertilizer, delivery, and labor require separate planning.

Need additional shapes or cutouts for an irregular lawn? Open the Square Footage Calculator.

Already know the area and depth of topsoil you plan to add? Estimate it separately with the Topsoil Calculator.

Before you order

What this sod estimate assumes

  • Entered lawn sections are regular rectangles or circles and do not overlap.
  • The extra sod allowance starts at 5% and changes only when you edit it.
  • Supplier coverage is required for piece, roll, or pallet counts and is never prefilled.
  • Inactive packaging values do not affect measured area, allowance, or order area.
  • Grass variety, climate, seed, sod thickness or weight, soil, fertilizer, irrigation, labor, delivery, cost, and supplier search are outside this estimate.

Sod questions

Frequently asked questions

How much sod do I need?

Measure the lawn area and add an allowance for cuts, trimming, measurement differences, and damaged pieces. If buying units, divide the order area by the supplier coverage and round up.

How many square feet are in a pallet of sod?

There is no universal pallet coverage. Sod farms and retailers package different products and quantities, so use the square-foot coverage stated by your supplier.

How much extra sod should I order?

The calculator starts at 5%, but the appropriate allowance depends on the lawn shape, trimming, handling, measurement confidence, and supplier guidance.

How many pallets of sod do I need?

Enter the supplier coverage for one pallet. The calculator divides your estimated order area by that coverage and rounds up to a whole pallet.

How many rolls of sod do I need?

Use the square-foot or square-meter coverage for the exact roll sold by your supplier. Measivo rounds the resulting count up to a whole roll.

Are all sod pallets the same size?

No. Pallet coverage varies by supplier and product. Measivo does not assume 450 ft², 500 ft², or any other universal value.

How do I calculate sod for an irregular yard?

Divide it into measurable, non-overlapping sections. Use Multiple rectangular areas here, or the Square Footage Calculator when you need additional shapes and cutouts.

Does this calculator include topsoil or installation?

No. It estimates sod area and optional purchase units only. Topsoil, site preparation, installation, watering, fertilizer, delivery, and labor are separate.
