Mulch Calculator

Estimate how much mulch you need from the area, your chosen depth, and an optional product-specific bag volume.

Mulch depth

A 2–4 in layer is common for many landscape applications. Choose the depth appropriate for your plants, existing mulch and project.

No extra mulch is added by default. Add an allowance if you want a buffer for uneven ground, spreading loss or extra material.

Bag volume information

Enter the actual volume printed on the bag. No bag size is assumed, and net weight is not used.

How it works

How to calculate how much mulch you need.

We calculate the bed area, multiply by your chosen depth, then apply only the extra mulch percentage you enter.

Rectangular and circular beds

Area = length × width, or π × (diameter ÷ 2)²

Multiple-area mode totals each rectangle multiplied by its quantity. Every area uses the same depth.

Mulch volume

Geometric volume = measured area × depth

US results use cubic yards with cubic feet alongside them; metric results use cubic meters.

Extra mulch

Order volume = geometric volume × (1 + allowance %)

The allowance starts at 0%. It is a planning buffer, not a settling or compaction factor.

Bags of mulch

Bags = round up(order volume ÷ actual volume per bag)

The calculator uses only the volume you copy from the package and never assumes a universal bag size.

Practical planning notes

Depth, package size, and existing mulch matter.

How deep should mulch be?

A 2–4 inch layer is common for many landscape uses, but the right depth depends on the plants, material, site, and mulch already present. Enter the depth you actually intend to install.

Bagged vs bulk mulch

Use the order volume for a bulk quote. For bags, enter the exact volume printed on your product and compare the resulting whole-bag count with local bulk options.

Adding mulch to an existing bed

Inspect the current layer and decide the final added depth before calculating. This MVP does not subtract existing mulch or estimate how much it has settled.

Before you order

What this mulch estimate assumes

  • Entered surfaces are regular rectangles or circles and do not overlap.
  • Every area in one calculation uses the same uniform depth; calculate different depths separately.
  • The depth is chosen by you and is used directly without an automatic recommendation.
  • Extra mulch is optional and starts at 0%; it is not a settling or compaction factor.
  • Bag counts depend only on the actual package volume you enter. No universal bag format or net-weight conversion is assumed.
  • Supplier delivery increments, minimum orders, local prices, material type, density, and weight are outside this estimate.

Use site and product information

Depth guidance varies with landscape conditions, while bag volumes vary by product. Confirm the planned depth for your bed and the actual package volume before ordering.

The 2–4 inch range is general educational guidance, not an automatic input. Manufacturer packaging remains the source for volume per bag.

Mulch questions

Frequently asked questions

How much mulch do I need?

Multiply the measured bed area by the mulch depth, then add only the planning allowance you want. This calculator performs those conversions and keeps the geometric and order volumes separate.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

There is no universal bag count. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so divide 27 by the actual cubic-foot volume printed on your bag and round up for a purchase count.

How much area does one cubic yard cover?

Coverage depends on depth. One cubic yard covers 324 ft² at 1 inch, 162 ft² at 2 inches, 108 ft² at 3 inches, or 81 ft² at 4 inches.

How deep should mulch be?

A 2–4 inch layer is common for many applications, but plants, material, drainage, and existing mulch affect the appropriate depth. Choose the depth for your specific bed.

Should I remove old mulch before adding more?

Inspect the existing layer first. Remove or redistribute material when it is excessive, matted, contaminated, or conflicts with the final depth you want; then calculate only the new depth you plan to add.

How do I calculate mulch for multiple beds?

Add each rectangular bed and its quantity in Multiple areas mode. All beds in one calculation use the same depth, so run separate calculations when depths differ.

Is bagged or bulk mulch better for my quantity?

Compare the exact order volume with local bulk delivery terms and with a bag count based on the package volume you plan to buy. Price, handling, and delivery rules are not assumed by this calculator.
