Insulation Calculator

Estimate insulation area and optional whole packages, rolls, bags or boards using the exact manufacturer coverage you enter.

How much surface will receive insulation?

Area method

Measurement system

Insulation surface

Area 1
Length
Width

Up to 20 rectangular areas.

Openings and excluded areas

Subtract only areas that genuinely will not receive insulation. Small openings and complex framing can still create cuts and offcuts.

Excluded area 1
Length
Width

Up to 20 rectangular excluded areas.

Extra insulation

No extra material is added by default. Add an allowance if appropriate for your product, layout and installer or manufacturer guidance.

Convert area into purchase units

Leave this at area only, or use verified coverage for the exact product and installation target.

Use the coverage printed on the product package or manufacturer documentation for the exact product and installation target you are using.

Loose-fill coverage per bag changes with the target R-value, installed thickness and application. Enter the manufacturer’s coverage for the exact target you plan to install.

Insulation formulas

Area and manufacturer coverage stay separate.

Dimensions convert to canonical meters before area is calculated. Product coverage changes only the purchase-unit estimate.

Gross area

Gross area = Σ(length × width × quantity)

One area, multiple rectangles and a known total all resolve to one physical surface.

Net area

Net area = gross area − excluded area

Excluded rectangles are optional and must remain smaller than the gross area.

Estimated area

Estimated area = net area × (1 + allowance %)

The allowance starts at 0% and changes only when the user edits it.

Purchase units

Units = ceil(estimated area ÷ manufacturer coverage)

Only verified coverage for the selected package, roll, bag or board is used.

Measure and verify

Use the exact product target, not a generic insulation assumption.

Measure insulation area

Divide walls, attics, ceilings, floors or roof surfaces into rectangles and combine the measured areas.

Windows and doors

Subtract only areas that will not receive insulation. Cuts around framing can still produce offcuts.

Batts and rolls

Use package square footage, while separately confirming width and thickness suit the framing cavities or installation method.

Loose-fill bags

Coverage per bag varies with target R-value, installed thickness and application. Use the correct manufacturer table entry.

Rigid boards

Enter manufacturer coverage per board. No standard board dimension or thermal value is assumed.

Choosing R-value

Required or recommended insulation levels depend on climate, assembly, existing insulation and applicable energy requirements. Determine R-value separately.

Extra insulation

No allowance is added automatically. Choose one only when appropriate for the product, cuts and project conditions.

Spray foam

Spray foam yield depends on volume, thickness and board feet. It is outside this area-and-package MVP.

Before you order

What this insulation estimate does—and does not—decide

  • The calculation estimates geometric insulation area, not thermal performance or code compliance.
  • R-value, thickness, material type and compatibility are determined separately for the actual assembly.
  • Inactive exclusions and purchase information do not influence the raw result.
  • Manufacturer coverage is never inferred from bag weight, density, product name or assumed dimensions.
  • Package square footage alone does not establish batt, roll or board compatibility with framing cavities.
  • Follow the insulation manufacturer’s installation and safety instructions. Do not block required ventilation, and use appropriate precautions around electrical equipment, heat-producing fixtures and building services.

Insulation questions

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of insulation do I need?

Enter the manufacturer’s square-foot or square-meter coverage per bag for your exact target R-value and installed thickness. Measivo rounds the resulting bag count up.

How many rolls of insulation do I need?

Measure the net area, apply any chosen allowance, then divide by the verified coverage per roll and round up.

How do I calculate square footage for insulation?

Multiply length by width for each rectangle, account for repeated areas, and subtract only genuine uninsulated rectangles.

Should I subtract windows and doors?

Only when those areas genuinely receive no insulation. Small openings and framing may still create cuts and offcuts.

How much extra insulation should I buy?

Measivo adds 0% by default. Choose an allowance using the product, layout and installer or manufacturer guidance.

Does every bag of loose-fill cover the same area?

No. Coverage changes with product, target R-value, installed thickness and application. Use the exact manufacturer coverage table.

What R-value insulation do I need?

That depends on climate, building assembly, existing insulation and applicable requirements. Determine it from appropriate official, local and product guidance before using the matching coverage.

Can I use this calculator for walls, attics and floors?

Yes for geometric material area, provided you separately determine suitable insulation, R-value, thickness and installation requirements.

Does this calculator work for rigid foam boards?

Yes when you enter the actual manufacturer coverage per board. It does not choose board thickness, R-value or compatibility.

Does it calculate spray foam?

No. Spray foam requires thickness and volume or board-foot yield, which are outside this calculator.
