Board rows
Rows = ceil((deck width + gap) ÷ (board width + gap))
Adding one gap to the numerator accounts for no outside gap after the final board.
Decking formulas
All dimensions convert to canonical units first. Each section is rounded independently, while the extra-material allowance is applied once to the combined base-board count.
Rows = ceil((deck width + gap) ÷ (board width + gap))
Adding one gap to the numerator accounts for no outside gap after the final board.
Stock boards per row = ceil(run length ÷ stock length)
The result does not assume perfect offcut reuse between rows.
Base boards = rows × boards per row × quantity
Every section is calculated before totals are added.
Boards to buy = ceil(base boards × (1 + allowance %))
The editable 10% starting allowance is applied once after all base counts are combined.
Measure and plan
Board run length follows each plank. The perpendicular deck width determines how many parallel rows are needed.
Nominal product names may differ from actual installed width. Use the measured or specified product dimension.
Spacing requirements vary by product and conditions. Enter the current manufacturer-required side-to-side gap rather than a universal value.
A run longer than one stock board requires multiple whole boards in every row. Offcuts are not automatically reassigned.
Divide L-shaped decks or changing board orientations into rectangles so every section has its own run and width.
Picture frames, breaker boards, diagonal patterns and other layouts require separate material planning.
Before you order
This calculator estimates deck surface boards only. Joist spacing, framing, fastening and structural requirements depend on the decking product, layout, loads and applicable rules. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and applicable building requirements.
Joists, beams, posts, footings, ledgers, hangers, fasteners, clips, railings, stairs, labor, cost and code compliance are not calculated.
Decking questions
Calculate the parallel rows from actual board width and gap, then multiply by the whole stock boards required along each row. Measivo performs those steps per section.
Enter 16 ft as the stock length. The count still depends on each board run, deck width, actual board width, gap and allowance.
Yes. The installed gap forms a repeating module with board width, while the last board has no exterior gap after it.
Use actual or manufacturer-specified installed width. Nominal names may not match the physical product.
Measivo starts at 10% for cuts, damage and jobsite waste. Adjust it for your layout and manufacturer or installer guidance.
Sometimes, but reliable reuse depends on joint layout, support locations and product rules. This conservative MVP does not optimize offcuts.
The geometry works for wood, composite or PVC when you enter the product’s actual dimensions, stock length and required gap. Always follow its installation instructions.
No. Framing, joist spacing, beams, posts, footings, loads and structural requirements are outside this surface-board estimate.
No. Picture frames, breaker boards, diagonals, herringbone, chevrons, inlays, stairs and fascia require separate planning.
